Essential trip gear

To come on any Club trip you will need to have the following essential items. Please follow the guidance and recommendations here; for your own safety and comfort we reserve the right to prevent you departing on a trip if your gear is inadequate. Please do come to Faraday Foyer and ask us if you're unsure about anything, or if you need some advice on what gear is best, check out our Gear Guide.

There are many outdoor shops in Lancaster, but as a Club member you can use your membership card to receive 10% discount at Ultimate Outdoors.

Club gear

The club will provide more specialist items such as tents, crampons and ice axes. Check out this page for more info.

During the winter

We require you to bring extra gear on hikes during the winter months, to keep warm and stay safe. Check out our Winter Walking guide for a list of what else to bring and other things to consider, such as will your boots be stiff enough to take crampons.

Weekend trips

As well as the essentials above, for a weekend trip you'll also need the following:
  • Sleeping bag - 3/4 season sleeping bag for camping in Scotland during the winter. Less insulation is fine for summer or bunkhouse trips.
  • Spare clothing - For travelling and socialising when not hiking.
  • Food - At least 2x breakfast, 2x lunch, 1x evening. Bringing extra food is always a very good idea. You can usually assume we'll stop at a Fish & Chip shop on the way there and back. Don't forget the tea and coffee!
  • Mug, plate and cutlery - We can provide trangias (stoves) to cook on.
Please try to minimise the amount of luggage you bring as space in the minibus or coach is finite and can't be too heavy
