Mountain Rescue evening

posted by Sam Harrison on 2013-02-04

This coming Friday, Bowland Pennine Mountain Rescue team will be coming onto campus for a search and rescue evening. We will be meeting at 6:30pm at the main university reception. We will split up into teams and the mountain rescue guys will go through procedures they use for searching for people, and you'll be giving the opportunity to conduct your own search for a missing item/person. The search should be finished by about 7:30pm.

Afterwards, we'll head to County Bar for a debrief and a few drinks. Please bring along a headtorch and the usual hiking clothing (with plenty of warm layers in case you're stood around for a while). If you have a compass, bring that along as well.

Borrowdale trip report

posted by John Wallbank on 2013-02-04

This is a trip report from the Borrowdale trip in week 1, written by John Wallbank.

The two minibuses met Andy in the Borrowdale valley. We then split up in to two groups; the smaller group, lead by Andy, headed towards Scafell Pike via the corridor route, and the larger was lead by me and Harry.

After initially being tempted by all of Richard's usual Borrowdale route (up Sour Milk Gill, and then round in an anticlockwise direction), we decided it would be better to miss out the first part.

We headed up an icy, snowy path to the top of Esk Hause. Harry led a smaller group down from there, while myself and some others carried on to the top of Allen Crags. From there we went over Glaramara, and down over Raven crags, just as it was getting dark to meet the rest of the club back in the pub. Throughout the day the weather was pretty clear, with cloud only on the highest peaks. The Scafell Pike group also reported it being particularly cold and windy all day, whereas our group had been sheltered most of the day (although we did have lunch in a KISU).
