   Lake District
East of Patterdale, and just a short hop up the M6 from Lancaster is the valley of Mardale, flooded by the creation of the Haweswater Reservoir in the middle of the last century. Haweswater trips are amongst the rarer LUHC outings, but they provide the chance to attack High Street, a large fell over the top of which the Romans built their road to Scotland. Kidsty Pike and Harter Fell also provide some entertainment on a Sunday trip often chosen to make use of the winter ice and snow. Pubs in the area are few and far between, but Shap chippy is a favourite refuge on the way back from Haweswater. This trip is definitely one for the walking enthusiasts.
