   Lake District
South of Wasdale, and over a couple of high passes from Little Langdale, is the valley of Eskdale - famous for its steam railway and its Roman connections. From here you can attempt the Scafell range from the south, as well as Bow Fell, Crinkle Crags and the smaller Hard Knott, which stands at the head of the valley. The Roman fort here is well worth a visit, although Hard Knott may be more memorable thanks to the very steep pass that snakes over the fell into Dunnerdale - a challenge for any minibus driver! To the south of Eskdale are the unfashionable Birker Fell and Ulpha Fell, which are excellent options for hikers wanting to get off the beaten track. Eskdale trips often feature the popular Woolpack Inn for a well deserved pint after the day's walking.
