Intro To Hiking

Our club is a welcoming space for everyone, regardless of hiking experience. Whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced hiker, we offer something for you. Each trip features a range of hikes, from easy to challenging.
But it's important to know your limits, so if you're unsure about which hike to join, don't hesitate to talk to the hike leaders who will be able to give you advice. We're always here to help!
If you prefer to socialize rather than hike, you're still welcome to join our club. With your membership, you can participate in our pub nights and other social events. We look forward to seeing you!

FAQ

These are the most commonly asked questions by members of the society. We encourage you to read through them, as they may address your inquiries. If you have further questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to us!

How do I buy membership or tickets?

Click Here and go to "Join this group" or "Events" and then "Buy Ticket"`

When do tickets go on sale?

For day trips, tickets will usually go up on Tuesday 1PM and 7PM. For weekend trips, tickets will be on the Thursday 2 weeks before the trip (~1.5 weeks /9 days before). There can also be a further release for refunded tickets (T&C apply)

How fast do tickets sell out? Will I ever be able to buy any?!?

Due to high demand from a lot of members, tickets usually sell out within minutes/seconds so it's a good idea to start refreshing the event page before they go live. As we get closer to the end the year the demand typically drops off due to exams so you may have more luck later on! And also a reminder to any regulars that we ask you be courteous of others and try not to book tickets in a row :)

How do I know what gear to bring?

A trip email will be sent at least 2 days before the hike with all the information you need. Alternatively, check the #🧣-gear-guide or ask in #🧥-gear-questions on discord!

Why you MUST wear ankle support!

Its part of our risk assessment to keep you safe any way we can, regardless of experience. One way we do this is through ankle supported boots to reduce chance of injury.

Why do we use groups?

We stick in groups lead by exec, alumni and walk leaders with first aid training as its our responsibility to keep you safe. If you wish to go hiking by yourself you can look at our public transport guide on how to get to the Lakes.

Can i drive for the club?

Yes absolutely! We rely on people being able to drive alongside min busses/coaches. For more info on how to drive for us see our drivers guide here

Can I get to the lakes myself?
Yes, our transport guide can be found here.

Day Hikes

Every weekend, we organize day hikes in the Lake District. While most hikes are scheduled for Sundays, we also offer a few on Saturdays each term for those who can't make it on Sundays. Our day hikes provide a fantastic opportunity to meet new people and enjoy the beautiful scenery. For our hikes, we have two pickup locations: one on campus at the Chaplaincy and another on Common Garden Street. We typically set off between 8 AM and 9 AM and return around 5 PM to 7 PM. After a long walk, we often relax at a local pub while we wait for the minibus or bus to return.

What to Bring:

More info on what to buy can be found here , but here is a list of what you need:
  • Waterproofs: Essential for staying dry.
  • Boots with Ankle Support: These are non-negotiable; you will be turned away without them.
  • Food and Snacks: Bring enough to keep you energized throughout the hike.
  • 1-2 Liters of Water: Staying hydrated is crucial.
  • Adequate Layers for Cold Weather: Remember, it gets colder the higher you go.
  • Swimming stuff if you would like to go for a dip.
  • A headtorch (winter months)
We look forward to hiking with you!

  • Sleeping Bag: Available for borrowing from the club.
  • Roll Mat: Also available for borrowing from the club
  • Food for 2-3 Nights: Be sure to pack enough meals and snacks for the duration of the trip.
  • A headtorch
  • Cutlery and a bowl or plate

Pub Socials

After our weekend hikes, we head to one of the local pubs in Lancaster. This is a fantastic opportunity to share stories from the hike, jot down your experiences in our logbooks, or simply meet new people. Many of the pubs offer fun activities, such as pool and darts, for everyone to enjoy. We hope to see you there!

Discord

Our primary mode of communication as a club is through Discord. This platform allows for multiple conversations to happen simultaneously on various topics, so you can easily join discussions that interest you. For example, you can explore conversations about ecology or check out the routes we are planning for future hikes.

Lending Equipment

As a club, we offer a selection of equipment for our members, including tents, sleeping bags, roll mats, and trangia stoves. Members can rent these items by paying a deposit and agreeing to replace or cover the repair costs if any damage occurs. Please note that rentals are exclusively available to club members. If you're interested in renting equipment, please message one of our Gear Officers on Discord for assistance. If you’re unable to find them, feel free to contact @exec in the Discord server.

Club Policies

As a club, we have two main policy documents, our Constitution, and our Code of Practice.
  • Constitution: This document outlines the aims of the club and how it should be operated. While you are not required to read it, you can find it available Here if you're interested.
  • Code of Practice: All members who wish to participate in our trips are required to read this document. It outlines expected conduct, as well as the roles of the executive team, navigators, and members. We emphasize this because your safety is our priority, and we want to ensure you avoid unnecessary risks while hiking. Please note that you are responsible for your own actions and involvement. The club reserves the right to deny participation in a trip if we believe you may endanger yourself or others. You can access the Code of Practice Here.
Thank you for being a part of our community!
